Can Plex stream full quality Blu-ray rips?
I installed the PLEX app on my ATV4! Very excited. I'm trying to convert all my blurays to digital files I can access easily. If I rip a bluray into an MKV will it stream full quality to PLEX if I set the stream settings to '1080p Unlimited'? Full quality? Same as the physical disc? Or is PLEX still going to compress it somehow? I used to convert them using handbrake but it takes so long I rather be able to just rip, drag and drop. Bonus if PLEX will actually play the film in full quality. 1:1 MKV Blu-ray rips, Plex and subtitles.
Streaming quality for Plex app
The streaming quality controls the quality, resolution, and bandwidth of the video when playing content. The lower the setting, the lower the quality of the video, but the less bandwidth it takes. You should choose settings appropriate for your particular situation and setup.
Available streaming qualities and the corresponding resolution of the stream:
20Mbps, 1080p
12Mbps, 1080p
10Mbps, 1080p
4Mbps, 720p
3Mbps, 720p
2Mbps, 720p
1.5Mbps, 480p
Therefore, to stream 1080p resolution Blu-ray, you will need a bandwidth higher than 10Mbps. If not, you will encounter Plex video buffering issues.
Get full quality Blu-ray rips for plex streaming
To get full quality Blu-ray rip, you can choose MakeMKV, which helps to convert the video clips from proprietary Blu-ray disc into a set of MKV files with multiple video/audio tracks, all meta-information and chapters preserved. However, if you wish to stream Blu-ray with Plex to other devices such as Roku, LG Netcast, Tivo Bolt, Vizio Television, smartphones, tablets, etc, you will need to find another tool to perform the conversion.
Fortunately, there are many alternatives to MakeMKV, the best one we recommend here is Pavtube ByteCopy (best Blu-ray Ripper), besides enabling you to make a complete MKV of Blu-ray copy for Plex streaming with full quality, the program can also do you a great favor to rip and convert Blu-ray to various different file formats and device preset profile formats. In addition, you can get better quality video by flexibly adjusting the output profile parameters such as video codec, bit rate, frame rate, resolution, audio codec, bit rate, sample rate and channels.
